Bearskin Trail
6x10, oil on panel.
I wanted to try out the Zorn palette on a landscape. I still needed to add Ultramarine and Cad Yellow, but I kept it pretty low in chroma.
The Bearskin Trail is a rail-trail conversion in Wisconsin that offers some of the most beautiful running that you could imagine.

Low Chroma Blocks
5x7, oil on panel.
Wooden blocks using the Zorn palette. Completed in roughly 20 minutes, because I really needed to go to bed.

One of the things I admire most about Van Gogh is that he painted everything. Landscape, Still Life, Portait, Figure. You name it, he probably painted it. The man had no fear. He would try anything.
This year has been a year of big changes for me and my painting practice. I’m painting more now than I ever have. I’m not finding time to paint, I’m making time to paint.

Sometimes, when I’m in the mood to paint but not sure what I want to paint, I will pull things that are destined for the trash and turn them into a small still life.
For this one, I was primarily interested in painting a little larger than I’ve been doing. While it did take considerably more time to cover the panel, I did enjoy working at this size.

I really enjoy painting these little block studies as a way to paint when I don’t know what to paint.

Garden Harvest
8x10, oil on paper, mounted on panel.
Our garden is finally starting to yield some ripe vegetables. We pulled a few dinners’ worth of green beans, grape tomatoes, and jalapenos out of the garden this morning.
I’m really struggling with how quickly I want to paint. I know I should be slowing down, measuring better, comparing colors more closely. But it seems each time I sit down to paint, I feel an urge to get it done as quickly as possible.

Choose Your Weapon
8x10, oil on panel.
I was really not in the mood to paint today, but I felt like I needed to get into the studio.
I keep reading advice from people who say things like, “it’s a hobby, man. Don’t do it if you aren’t in the mood.”
Well you know what? I wasn’t in the mood to run today either, and I did it anyway. It wasn’t my greatest effort ever, but I know it was beneficial.
